Five race weekends including a 5th place at the Italian Grand Prix (Monza).
At the launch of the 1994 season, the aim of the FIA was to put the emphasis back on the drivers’ skills. Many of the technologies designed to help them, such as active suspension, power brakes, ABS and traction control, which had been fitted to some of the previous season’s cars, were no longer permitted. The show on the track after the Senna/Prost duels promised to be prolonged, as did the rivalry between the teams and especially the engine manufacturers with the surprise arrival of Peugeot, determined to play elbows with Renault, world champion with Williams.
Visually, the car designed by Neil Oatley is one of the most beautiful Formula 1 of the decade. Very similar to the MP4/8 of the previous season, it is for the 21st consecutive year in the levery of it sponsor Marlboro. Technically, the arrival of Peugeot Sport with its V10 A4 then A6 derived from the twice victorious Peugeot 905 in the 24 Hours of Le Mans imposed subtle aerodynamic changes to the floor and sides. The lack of time before the start of the season in Brazil will penalise the development of the car, but it will remain one of the most innovative F1 cars with its power steering, its data acquisition system developed by the French manufacturer, and its new design. The car will remain one of the most innovative F1 cars with its power steering, its data acquisition system developed by TAG Electronics, which is totally revolutionary in the world of motor sport, and its ingenious steering wheel gearshift, the first of its kind! Driven by the young and promising Finn Mika Häkkinen, replacing Ayrton Senna, and the Briton Martin Brundle, Ron Dennis’s single-seaters performed well from the third Grand Prix of the season, with Martin Brundle finishing second at the Monaco Grand Prix and Mika Hakkinen third at the San Marino Grand Prix.
It was the first time in McLaren’s history that the team started a season without a race winner in its line-up, yet the car was very fast in qualifying, but unfortunately suffered from a lack of reliability. Despite eight podium finishes and ten races in the points, the McLaren failed to win during the 1994 season. In the end, McLaren and Peugeot finished 4th in the constructors’ world championship with 42 points, and ended their collaboration precipitously, despite the numerous improvements made with the arrival of the famous 3.5l V10 A6 developing 740hp...
The MP4/9 was the first and only McLaren F1 car to use Peugeot engines. Eight chassis were built and the one we are lucky enough to offer for sale today has never been modified since its last race weekend that year at Monza in Italy! Chassis number 7 was present in five of the sixteen Grand Prix of the 1994 season in the hands of Mika Hakkinen and Martin Brundle. First on the Magny-Cours circuit during the French Grand Prix with Mika Hakkinen, then in Great Britain, in Germany, in Hungary with the Finnish driver (#7) and then in Italy at Monza. Reserve car for Mika Hakkinen on four occasions, it will finally be driven to the 5th place of his last Grand Prix after a very good recovery from the 12th place on the starting grid by Martin Brundle (#8). The car has been stored and exhibited at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking for 26 years and is now ready to return to the track. It is equipped with a Peugeot V10 A6 3.5l engine developing 740 hp as it did originally.
Nearly 250.000 € have been invested to allow it to return to the track and to participate in the various new platforms open to F1 cars from this period, such as the BOSS GP or Formula Legends 3.5 by Peter Auto, which concerns F1 cars with engines from the years 1987 to 1994... of which it will therefore be one of the best performing.
