In 1988 Honda became a partner of McLaren creating the McLaren Honda team. The McLaren Honda MP4/4 immediately became the car to beat, winning 15 of the 16 Grand Prix in which it participated. Designed by Gordon Murray, it still represents one of the most effective Formula 1 cars in history. The drivers Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost fought each other for the world title, without any opponent could oppose.
The technical regulation provided for the possibility of using aspirated engines of 3.500 displacement, or turbo engines of 1.500 displacement, with boost pressure limited to 2.5 bar. Honda chose this second possibility, as the evolution planned for its V6 engine allowed it to maintain an advantage over the other teams. The engine used was the Honda RA168-E, double turbo and with a power of about 650 horses at 12.500 rpm.
The McLaren Honda MP4/4 won the 1988 constructors title and Ayrton Senna won the drivers' world championship. The Honda and McLaren partners with Ayrton Senna also won the world championship in 1989, 1990 and 1991, writing an important story on the motorsport page.
