In May 1993, FIAT acquired Maserati from the De Tomaso Group through the acquisition of 100% of the Maserati S.p.a. The Car Collection, while remaining on display in the Company, remained the property of the existing O.A.M. LTD owned by DeTomaso.
In the month of July 1996, Mr. De Tomaso legitimately requested the return of the cars and engines of the Museum Collection.
The Maserati accepted the request, but bought part of the Collection composed of 15 engines, which then remained on display inside the Modena company, while the Collection of 19 cars, on the advice of De Tomaso, left for England to be sold to the auction in London.
The Minister of Cultural Heritage and the Mayor of Modena immediately took action to find a solution that would allow the recovery of this historical and cultural heritage that the city of Modena risked losing forever.
Since then, the Collection of 19 Maserati historic cars has been housed at the Umberto Panini Museum, located in Modena at the farm - https://www.hombre.it/it - of the Panini family (famous throughout the world for the eponymous figurines of the players).
The collection, in addition to the Maserati cars, hosts numerous cars of different brands and motorcycles, including some examples of Maserati motorcycles.
The probably most significant car of the rich collection is the Maserati 420M Eldorado, built expressly for the 500Miglia of Monza in 1958, with which Stirling Moss fought for the top positions. The history of this car is also important as it introduced the concept of sponsoring a racing car in Europe.
